EL CUCHILLO MAS RAPIDO DEL OESTE / THE FASTEST KNIFE OF THE WEST

Leyendo el título del artículo de hoy, uno podría pensar que estamos hablando sobre un numero de circo. Pero no es así.	From reading the title of today’s post, one might think we are talking about a circus act. However, that is not the case.
En una época anterior a la anestesia (principios de los años 1800s), la velocidad del cirujano, podía marcar la diferencia, entre la vida y la muerte.    Robert Liston, un cirujano escocés del momento, era conocido por ser capaz de operar en apenas algunos segundos. Así mismo, recibiendo el apodo: “el cuchillo más rápido del lado oeste".  Él mismo aseguraba haber amputado una extremidad en menos de 28 segundos!	In a time prior to modern anesthetics (in the early 1800’s), a surgeon’s speed operating could mean the difference between life and death.  Robert Liston, Scottish surgeon at the time, was known for being able to operate in seconds. Accordingly he became known as "the fastest knife of the west end".  He even claimed having amputated a limb in less than 28 seconds!
Tanta velocidad tenía su precio.  Os dejo con sus dos cirugias más famosas: ¡Que le corten la pierna! Y quizás un poquito más Dr. Liston se encontraba frente al paciente para amputarle una pierna. Con su destreza habitual acabó la cirugía en apenas 2½ minutos. Pero espera! Parece que en la euforia y con la prisa del momento también le ha amputado ambos testículos.   Tres por uno De nuevo, "el cuchillo más rápido del lado oeste" se enfrenta a la amputación de una pierna (algo común y peligroso en la época, como ya os habréis dado cuenta en la historia anterior). Esta vez los genitales del paciente están sanos y salvos; pero los dedos de su asistente no tuvieron la misma suerte. Tanto paciente como ayudante  murieron en el acto. Pero por si eso no fuera suficiente, su sierra rasgó la bata de un compañero de profesión que veía la operación de cerca. ¡Él también falleció del susto! ¡Es la única cirugía en la historia con una mortalidad de 300%! And perhaps a little bit more Dr. Liston stood before a patient, ready to amputate a leg. With his usual impressive ability he finished the operation in 2½ minutes. But wait! It seems that in the euphoria and rush of the surgery the doctor amputated the patient’s testicles along with the leg.    Three for one Once again, the "fastest knife of the west end" faces a leg amputation (a quite common yet dangerous operation at the time, as you might have guessed from the previous case).  This time, the patient’s genitals were perfectly safe; however the assistant´s fingers were not so lucky. Both patient and assistant died right then and there. But if that was not enough, his saw also reached the coat of one of his fellow surgeons who was there watching the operation from up close.  He too died of fright!  It is the only surgery in history with a 300% mortality rate!
