At the same time that Menelik II took possession of the throne, on the other side of the world (in Buffalo, New York, USA) the electric chair was being used successfully for the first time. This new method of capital punishment , invented by the dentist Alfred P. Southwark, was supposedly a much more humane way of executing criminals than by hanging them (as was commonly done at the time.
Even tough this might sound a bit strange now a says, at the time, owning an electric chair could be easily interpreted as a symbol of technological progress and at the same as a symbol of a true humanitarian. A perfect fit for the plans of the emperor for his country.
As part of his initiative to modernise the country he bought not one, nor two,... but three electric chairs with which to fry (humanely) the criminals who would dare break the law.
The Americans, although quite surprised about receiving such a large order, did not take long to start working on these chairs. And it was´t long before the citizens of Ethiopia received their order.
But how could they get these chairs to work?
As it turns out, in his impulsive purchase (something similar to what an "early adopter" would do now a days with the launch of a new gadget), this inexperienced emperor forgot to make sure that his country had the necessary infrastructure to be able to use them.
At the time of the purchase, Ethiopia did not yet have electricity!
What a useless expense!
What could he do with those three enormous chairs?
Well, he had no better idea than to use them as royal thrones in his palace, which ironically was the only place the entire country that had electricity. That same year he had purchased a small generator that without a doubt would have not have been potent enough to provide the necessary energy for an electric chair.
It was not until 1912, when Ethiopia opened its first Hydroelectric Plant (just one year before the death of the emperor.
Saludos Berta. Interesante post, ciertamente una compra impulsiva y el rey tendría que tener cuidado con esos tronos ya que en su palacio con electricidad si podrían funcionar :). Estaré atenta a tu interesante blog. Éxitos y bendiciones!
